Thank you for visiting LeatherSeats 101.  Here we provide a broad range of information on a wide variety of topics.  Many of these articles are in response to our customer's most common questions or specific product information that we feel is important to inform our customers of.  This particular article covers the leather content, or amount of leather used, in our leather interior kits.  Continue reading below to find out more information...

The current industry standard for the leather content of an automotive leather interior varies a lot of manufacturer to manufacturer, but the majority of them use some combination of leather and vinyl in their leather interiors.  Traditionally, automotive leather interiors were either close to 100% leather or 100% vinyl.  This was mainly because the look, grain (texture), and hand (feel) of the vinyl did not match that well to automotive grade leather.  However, as vinyl technology advanced, automotive vinyls became more natural looking, feeling, and could be reproduced with a fairly accurate leather grain.  These new vinyls could now be paired with automotive grade leathers to make leather interiors more economical.  Automotive manufacturers began putting vinyl in areas of the seat that were not considered seating surfaces or areas where the vehicle owners did not commonly touch often.

These leather/vinyl combination leather interiors effectively made premium model vehicles much more affordable to produce and some of these savings were passed on to the consumers. These leather/vinyl leather interiors with leather seating surfaces quickly became the industry standard for mainstream automotive manufacturers.  They also became very popular with consumers because premium models became more affordable and began to fill the marketplace.

This trend continued as automotive manufacturers realized that affordable premium model vehicles were in demand by consumers.  They began to add more vinyl to their interiors typically starting with the rear bench, but some manufacturers added vinyl to the front seats as well.  You can typically identify these interiors by the terminology that the manufacturers will use to describe these interiors.  They use terms like "leather appointed", "leather trimmed", or something similar.

Many people learning this information for the first time might feel that these interiors are of lower quality because of the additional vinyl, but this is not necessarily true. The main factor in quality is going to be the materials used and the craftsmanship that goes into the interior. The choice between a 100% vinyl, leather/vinyl combination, or 100% leather interior is really a matter of personal taste, budget, and based on the requirements of the project.  For some work trucks, a 100% or mainly vinyl interior kit might fit the project while for a person looking for the ultimate in luxury for their vehicle might want a 100% leather kit.  Unfortunately, most manufacturers do not offer a choice in leather content for their vehicles and so whatever they designed for their interior is what the consumer will be stuck with.  However, LeatherSeats.com allows you to pick the leather content that you find best fits your taste and project needs.  Keep reading below to learn more...
